Proof that you don’t have to own a business in the city’s north industrial area to belong to the North Saskatoon Business Association can be found with two of the year’s winners of NSBA Business Builder awards.
Two well-known area tourism sites a golf course near Perdue and a dude ranch located outside St. Denis won recognition Wednesday at the annual gala banquet attended by more than 450 people from the 715 member companies of the NSBA.
The Perdue Oasis Golf & RV Resort, owned by Jim Scharf Holdings Ltd., won the New Direction Award at the banquet. Scharf became famous nationally a decade ago for marketing E-ZEEWRAP, which is a dispenser of a giant roll of plastic wrap.
A few years ago, Scharf decided to take advantage of the natural beauty of the Bear Hills area near Perdue, west of Saskatoon, and built a links-style golf course along with a dining room spa and RV park. The wind-protected outdoor balcony on the dining room is now advertised in the Saskatoon Convention and Event Planning Guide as “Saskatchewan’s largest glassed-in terrace.”
Scharf is working to expand the golf course to 27 holes. Ever the marketing whiz, he is currently operating the course with 20 holes, which gives his patrons two extra holes of free golf for “practice.” As well, he also offers free GPS tracking on golf carts.
